Really there is no good way to run a dial-up connection in linux any more.
With the Conexant drivers being proprietary, and the rest of the modems being 'Win-modems' which are based on MS proprietary software, pretty much. Gone are the days of 'open' modems it seems.I bought a 'works with linux' modem from Best buy 2 years ago. The last version of ubuntu it worked with was 7.10. I had to email Linuxant (the group that controls the linux Conexant drivers) to get a more up to date version of the driver only to find that every time I updated my kernel I would have to update the driver. Downloading a 2.xxMb driver once a month on 56k isn't my idea of fun. That being said I opted for Wireless broadband only to find that it too isn't compatable with anything past the old Ubuntu LTS (which was just replaced last week with the new LTS) but wouldn't work with any of my current kernels.
Yeah, fun times. Not saying it can't be done, but it's not easy. Thanks for comments.
Reading other threads here, I saw a reference to the Mint distro. Do you know if it would be friendlier for a dialup modem user?Looking on newegg, I found a modem with good reviews from some Ubuntu users-anyone familiar with this US Robotics external modem?:U.S. Robotics USR5637 56Kbps USB High-performance V.92 modemI was reading 'Beginning Ubuntu Linux (3rd Edition)' by Keir Thomas and Jaime Sicam, and they say external modems w/serial ports work well, but USB not so well-the USRobotics modem above is USB. But: this book was pubbed in 2008, so info might be outdated.I'm kind of surprised at the general lack of support for dialup. It's not a 'glamour' connection method, but millions of people around the world don't have access to broadband and must use their existing POTS equipment, esp in less-developed countries. This lack of support seems contrary to the stated goals of Ubuntu, to be accessible to.everyone.
Including users who might be low-income or unemployed who can't afford bband. And as some other reviews (industry mags) noted, a person traveling with a laptop might stay in a place w/no bband access so they'd have to use the phone line.
Apparently that's a selling point for the above modem-it's very small, light, easy to carry.Anway-how about dialup on Mint?Edited by jon-9, 04 May 2010 - 10:04 AM.

There is a compile-it-yourself option. See.Download the tar and then follow METHOD C on the.Following your comment, I decided to try building it. It went fine. Here's what I did:. Download and extract the tar for the right arch.cd into the new directory and then sudo make debprecomp.Assuming everything worked, there should be a.deb file sitting in the directory above the current working dir.
Just double-click it and it should install. After that just follow the rest of the installation instructions.
